Chapter 5
Big Wins and a Big Loss
Although Seabiscuit had lost the big race, he actually gained many new fans. People didn't blame the horse for the loss, they blamed the jockey. They began to read more and more about this little horse with the big heart and great speed. Like his many fans, Seabiscuit was trying his best to win. Americans saw something of their own struggles in those of the hardworking horse. During the Great Depression, Americans wanted to be cheered up by the movies they saw and the radio shows they listened to. Popular entertainment thrived with happy rags-to-riches stories of regular people who became famous or rich or both. The story of Seabiscuit was no different.
