کتاب داستان The Red Pony (کره اسب سرخ) نوشته‌ی جان اشتاین بک از دسته کتاب‌های Short Story فروشگاه اینترنتی کتابانه می‌باشد. داستان از جایی شروع می شود که پدر جودی، یک کره اسب سرخ رنگ به او هدیه می‌دهد. جودی که از خوشحالی در پوست خود نمی‌گنجد، تمام وظایفی که پدرش در ازای دادن کره اسب از او می‌خواهد را می‌پذیرد، جودی تصمیم می‌گیرد نام او را گالیبان بگذارد. گالیبان نام کوه‌های سرسبز و پوشیده از درختان بلوطی است که در آن سوی مزرعه است. بعد از هفته‌ها تربیت و شناخت گالیبان، پدر جودی به او اجازه می‌دهد که در روز شکر گزاری کمی در مزرعه اسب سواری کند. اما باران می‌بارد و کره اسبی که برای مدتی در بارندگی بوده و اکنون در اصطبل استراحت می‌کند، مبتلا به چیزی شبیه به سرما خوردگی شده ...

Evening was falling when they went to the house for their supper. Jody didnt even realize that somone else had fed the chickens and filled the wood-box. He walked up past the house to the dark brush line and took a drink of water from the tub. The coldness of water surprised his mouth. The sky above the hills was still light. He watched a hawk flying high into the sun. Two blackbirds were driving it down the sky shining as they attacked their enemy. In the west the clouds were moving in with rain again.
Nobody talked at supper that night but after Billy returned to the barn Carl Tiflin built a high fire and told stories. Jody sat with his chin in his hands his mouth worked nervously and his father noticed that he wasnt listening very carefully.
"Isnt that funny jody?" he asked.
Jody laughed politely and said, "yes, sir".
But his father was angry and hurt, then. That was the end of stories for that night.
