In the production of speech sounds, three basic airstream mechanisms are distinguished: pulmonic air flow, glottal airflow, and velar airflow. Pulmonic airflow, generated by the lungs, is basic to speech production. During regular breathing, inward (ingressive) and outward airflow alternate. For the production of speech, the most common mode is an outward flow of air generated by the lungs, known as an aggressive pulmonic airflow.

Recall that an aggressive airflow does not require muscular effort after inhaling: the elastic recoil forces will start to flow from the lungs to the air outside the vocal tract. Oral stop consonant produced with an aggressive pulmonic airstream are also known as plosives. However, stop and other obstruent consonants can also be produced with other airstream mechanisms. Typically in these cases, a constriction is formed in the oral cavity, as is the case for plosives, but the airstream is generated and modified in a different way.
