Fluidized-Bed and Moving-Bed Operation
Although the batchwise and columnar modes of ion exchange operation are essentially the only ones practiced commercially, other methods are now being taken into consideration. Of interest is the fluidized-bed operation, an operation found to be most successful in the catalytic cracking process. For exchange reactions having favorable equilibrium constants, the chief advantages of a fluidized- and moving-bed operation are (1) continuous operation, (2) constant composition of effluent, and (3) lower resin inventory. It is this last advantage that has intrigued many engineers.
In fixed-bed systems, at any particular instant, a large fraction of the resin bed remains idle; that is, it is not functioning in a useful manner.
Operations Required for Cyclic Use
Introduction. Ion exchange resins can be employed in a variety of methods. The two most common are batch and column operations. Of these the column operation is generally more satisfactory since better contact and higher efficiencies can be obtained.
This is the technique which is most commonly used for ion exchange operations. In order to use ion exchangers in cyclic column operation, it is necessary that a series of basic operations be employed.
These are backwashing, regeneration, rinsing, and exhaustion Backwashing. The backwash is usually considered the first step in the parathion of an ion exchanger for regeneration. This up flow washing usually takes place after an ion exchanger has completed an operating or exhausting cycle.
However, there may be occasions when this step will be eliminated or will follow regeneration. Several things are accomplished by backwashing. Physically, the bed of material is loosened, expanded, and reclassified.
This permits more uniform distribution of fluid on subsequent downflow operations. Dirt and other foreign matter which are removed by filtration during downflow operation are washed out of the bed and out of the unit. Thirdly, ions which tend to become distributed in the bed in bands will be uniformly mixed throughout the entire length of the bed.
The density of the exchange materials, the particle size, and the viscosity of the solution all have an effect on the ability of the backwash to clean the particles and displace the suspended matter to waste. Ordinarily, water is used for the backwashing since large volumes are available at a relatively low cost.
