کتاب Essential Words For The GRE ، با هدف آموزش واژگان ضروری برای زبان‌آموزان و داوطلبان آزمون GRE انتشار یافته‌است. این کتاب سیستم آموزش صحیح لغات، تقویت توانایی استدلال کلامی، تجزیه و تحلیل گفتمان، درک کلیت متن و ارائه خلاصه مطالب و درنهایت فهم روابط بین واژگان و جملات را آموزش داده‌است.

کتاب پیش‌رو از سیزده بخش تشکیل شده و در این سیزده فصل، به داوطلبان آموزش داده شده که پیش از آزمون چه اقداماتی انجام دهند، چگونه بر واژگان مورد نیاز تسلط یابند و چگونه برای آزمون برنامه‌ریزی کنند، سپس سیصد واژه پرکاربرد در آزمون GRE، به همراه نقش دستوری و یک مثال از آن سیصد واژه آورده شده ‌است. سپس تعدادی پیشوند و پسوند رایج آموزش داده‌ شده ‌است. پس از آن اقداماتی که زبان‌آموزان پس از آزمون باید انجام دهند بیان شده‌ است. همه‌ی بخش‌ها و مطالب کتاب مملو از پرسش‌های پرکاربرد مانند پرسش‌های جای خالی، کلوزتست، چند گزینه‌ای و ... می‌باشد. نکته‌ی قابل توجه این است که منبع همه پرسش‌ها و آزمون‌های شبیه‌ساز، آزمون‌های GRE پیشین می‌باشد. این موضوع به داوطلبان کمک میکند تا راحت‌تر شرایط آزمون را درک کنند. همچنین پاسخنامه تمام این پرسش‌ها در کتاب ارائه شده که به زبان‌آموزان و داوطلبان کمک می‌کند نقاط ضعف و قوتشان را شناسایی کنند.

در این کتاب به خوبی آموزش داده ‌شده که چگونه بدون دانستن معنی برخی واژگان، بتوان پاسخ صحیح را حدس زد. البته یکی از پیش‌نیازهای اصلی برای شرکت در آزمون GRE ، داشتن دامنه گسترده‌ای از لغات پیشرفته می‌باشد، به همین جهت سیصد واژه که در آزمون‌های پیشین جزو واژگان پرکاربرد محسوب شده‌اند، به طور کامل آموزش داده‌ شده‌اند. از آنجایی که متن‌های آزمون GRE عمدتا پیچیده بوده و همه واژگان متن مرتبط با یکدیگر هستند، تشخیص و تمایز واژگان اصلی از واژگان انحرافی و گمراه کننده معمولا سخت و دشوار است، این کتاب نیز سعی کرده این موضوع را حل کند و نحوه حذف کلمات انحرافی و یافتن پاسخ صحیح را به خوبی آموزش داده‌است.
