Mosaic 1 Writing

Reading l: Great Leaders in the World by Howard Gardner
For a book called Leading Minds, I studied 21 leaders. Some leaders began as scholars (Margaret Mead, J. Robert Oppenheimer). Some led large organizations (Alfred P. Sloan). Others were leaders of nations (Margaret Thatcher), and still others led beyond national boundaries (Mahatma Gandhi and Jean Monnet). This study showed certain characteristics of effective leaders. Successful leaders must be able to speak well in public, to understand other people well, to have the experience of travelling early in life, and of challenging others in authority in a respectful way my study showed that successful leadership is a relationship between leaders and followers. A leader creates a story or a message that significantly affects the thoughts, behaviors, and feelings of a large group of people. A leader's story must be powerful. The most powerful stories are about identity, they help individuals discover who they are, where they are coming from, or where they are going a leader must also "embody" his or her story: the leader's own actions and way of life serve as an example of the message. Margaret Thatcher's message was an important part of her successful leadership. Her story gave English people a clear direction. It advised people to be thrifty and efficient and concentrate their energy to rebuild their country to a position of international prominence. If people followed Thatcher's vision, a new, stronger, and more vibrant nation could emerge. Margaret Thatcher was able to convince millions of Britons that she embodied the story she told. They believed that she used her wit and energy to accomplish things in her own life and that she contributed personally to the reinvigoration of Britain through her courage during the Falklands War and after a terrorist bombing at the Conservative Party congress in Brighton. The successful leader begins with a simple story but does not end there what makes Mahatma Gandhi and Jean Monnet great (and different from other leaders) is that, over time, they were able to convince their followers of a more sophisticated story. Gandhi convinced Indians and citizens of other nations that conflict did not have to be violent. Jean Monnet convinced French people as well as citizens and leaders of other nations that Europe did not have to remain a collection of hostile countries. His message was that there could be power, profit, and peace in dissolving or changing the boundaries. Gandhi and Monnet met many obstacles, but, as Monnet once said, they considered every defeat an opportunity. They had the same vision for 60 years and were flexible in their methods of leadership. They changed the thinking of millions of individuals.
