درباره‌ی کتاب SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING THEORIS

بدون شک، یکی از مقدمه‌ها و پیش‌نیازهای اصلی مدرسین زبان کم‌تجربه و دانش‌جویان رشته‌های زبان در خصوص‌یادگیری زبان دوم، برسی و مطالعه دقیق نظریه‌های اساتید زبان‌شناسی و روانشناسان یادگیری در این زمینه می‌باشد. کتاب Second Language Learning Theories (نظریه‌های یادگیری زبان دوم) نیز یکی از بهترین کتاب‌های موجود در این زمینه می‌باشد. این کتاب با بهره،گیری از تخصص و تجارب چندین ساله متخصصین آموزش زبان دوم، توانسته یک بررسی مقدماتی پویا در این زمینه ارائه دهد.

کتاب مذکور سعی کرده تمامی نظریه‌ها، دیدگاه‌ها و رویکردهای اصلی‌نظریه‌‌های یادگیری زبان دوم را پوشش دهد. با مطالعه این کتاب می‌توان به این نتیجه رسید که رویکردهای شناختی، زبانی، جامعه شناختی و علمی کاربردی از مهم‌ترین این نظریه‌ها هستند و سایر رویکردها هرکدام به نوعی به این نظریه‌ها وابسته هستند. نویسندگان این کتاب نیز سعی کرده‌اند تا افراد را برای مقایسه و برسی تقابل هر یک از نظریه‌ها تشویق کنند. این کتاب از ده فصل تشکیل شده و هر فصل چهارچوب واحدی به‌پیش برده است. در ابتدای هر فصل یک مقدمه آورده شده که سعی کرده نکات کلی و سیر تاریخی آن نظریه و رویکرد را بیان کند و افراد را با کلیت مباحث آن فصل آماده سازد. سپس نظریه‌را به‌طور کامل شرح داده و ادعاها و دامنه هر نظریه را از دیدگاه زبان‌شناسان، زبان‌آموزان و روند تحصیل زبان دوم براساس این نظریه را بررسی می کند، همچنین نقدهایی که به آن نظریه وارد گشته را مطرح ساخته است.

لازم به‌ذکر است که خلاصه‌ای از مطالعات کلیدی و مثال‌های فراوان، مباحث هرفصل را تکمیل می‌نماید. در پایان نیز هر فصل با خلاصه‌ای مختصر و ارزیابی کلی نظریه‌های مورد بحث پایان می‌یابد. اشاره مستقیم به اصطلاحات تخصصی و نکات کلیدی هر نظریه نیز به افراد کمک می‌کند تا نظریه‌های شبیه به‌هم را راحت‌تر از یکدیگر تشخیص دهند.
لازم به ذکر است نویسندگان این کتاب، پرفسور روزامند میچل، پرفسور فلورانس مایلس و پرفسور اما مارسدن همگی از اساتید دانشگاه‌های برتر اروپا و از زبان‌شناسان برجسته جهان هستند و حاصل تجربیات چند ده ساله خود را در این کتاب به‌کار گرفته‌اند.

3. Linguistics and language learning: the Universal Grammar approach
3.1 Introduction In this chapter, we start to consider individual theoretical perspectives on second language learning in greater detail. Our first topic is the Universal Grammar approach (the generative linguistics approach), developed by the American linguist Noam Chomsky and numerous followers over the last few decades. We have concentrated on this particular approach because it has been much the most influential linguistic theory in the field, and has inspired a great wealth of publications, both empirical and theoretical (for full length treatments, see Ayoun, 2003 Cook and Newson, 2007, Hawkins, 2001: Herschensohn, 2000. Larder, 2007: Leung, 2009: Thomas, 2004: White, 2003), The main aim of linguistic theory is twofold: firstly, to characterize what human languages are like (descriptive adequacy), and secondly, to explain why they are that way (explanatory adequacy). In terms of second language acquisition, a linguistic approach sets out to describe the evolving language produced by second language learners, and to explain its character. Universal Grammar (UG) is therefore a property theory (as defined in Chapter 1), that is, it attempts to characterize the underlying linguistic knowledge in L2 learners' minds. In contrast, a detailed examination of the learning process itself (transition theory) will be the main concern of the cognitive approaches which we describe in Chapters 4 and 5 First, in this chapter, we will give a broad definition of the aims of the Chomskyan tradition in linguistic research, in order to identify the aspects of second language acquisition to which this tradition is most relevant. Second, we will examine the concept of Universal Grammar itself in some detail, and finally we will consider its application in second language learning research.
3.2 Why a Universal Grammar? 3.2.1 Aims of linguistic research
The main goals of linguistic theory, as defined by Chomsky (1986a), are to answer three basic questions about human language:
What constitutes knowledge of language?
How is knowledge of language acquired?
How is knowledge of language put to use? ("Knowledge of language is an ambiguous term. Here, it means the subconscious mental representation of language which underlies all language use.)
